Best Horror Movies That Subvert Your Expectations

Movies are often very predictable. They can be formulaic and filled with genre cliches, especially when it comes to horror movies. Many horror movies use tired and overused elements in their stories, despite the fact that the purpose of the genre is to keep audiences on their toes. However, every once in a while, you get a horror movie that’s different from the rest. These horror movies stand out as some of the best because of how they use our expectations against us and continue to surprise us at every turn. This blog post goes through the 10 best horror movies that subvert your expectations.

10 Horror Films That Will Keep You Guessing

10. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Don’t Breathe takes the classic home invasion story and twists it completely on its head. The suspense built from the unique situation is palpable and it will take you back to the Hitchcock era.

8. Ready or Not

It’s easy to make a subversive horror film with comedy. You can use humor to poke fun at typical genre conventions, which makes the experience a lot more lighthearted overall. This is precisely what Ready or Not achieves. Ready or Not centers around a bride’s wedding night which takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.

7. The Empty Man

From the marketing, the trailers, and even the title, The Empty Man sounds like a creature feature similar to The Bye Bye Man or Slenderman. However, the film is not what you expect it to be. It’s atmospheric, slow moving, and deeply philosophical. The film was released last year during the quarantine but was overlooked because of the constant news cycles about COVID-19. Now, audiences are beginning to discover the film and give it the recognition it deserves. The Empty Man is about an ex-cop who is looking for a missing girl when he comes across a secretive group attempting to summon a terrifying supernatural entity.

6. Don’t Look Now

Don’t Look Now is a hauntingly atmospheric film that starts to get under your skin from the very first scene. The film is very different from other horror movies. It doesn’t even feel like a horror for most of the film until an unexpected twist shifts the tone completely. Don’t Look Now was released the same year as The Exorcist which might explain why it has been so underappreciated over the years. The film is about a married couple who are grieving the recent death of their young daughter in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is a psychic and brings a warning from beyond.

5. Get Out

Jordan Peele made a huge directorial debut with Get Out. This horror film is Peele’s subversive response to the horror genre by having a black man as the main character instead of as someone expendable or in a supporting role. It’s also Peele’s subversive response to Hollywood by playing off the white savior cliche and using it against the viewers. Get Out quickly became a cultural phenomenon because of how it examined race in a terrifying yet entertaining way. The film follows a young African-American who visits his white girlfriend’s parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.

3. Cabin in the Woods

If there was a film that embodied the term subversive, it would be Cabin in the Woods. The film was created as a horror-comedy to poke fun at all the cliches and tropes commonly used in horror movies. The film is about five college friends who vacation at the quintessential cabin in the middle of the woods. While they are there, they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin.

2. Scream

One of the most well-known subversive horror movies ever made. Scream is a horror film made to play on the classic horror genre conventions in a very meta way. The film centers around a teenage girl who is terrorized by a killer that uses horror films as part of a deadly game. Scream is one of the main reasons why subversive horror movies are so popular today.

1. The Exorcist

The Exorcist is not like other horror movies. It doesn’t focus on jump scares or twist endings. Instead, it focuses on a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a demon and the havoc it wrecks on her life. Although you would expect the film to be sensitive in the actions the 12 year old girl does while being possessed, William Friedkin, the director, does not hold back. The horror of the film comes from the likeness of a 12-year-old girl being forced to do disturbing things while being controlled by a demon. The film was very divisive in its initial release. At many theaters, paramedics were called to treat viewers who fainted or became hysterical.

Subversive Horror Movies Will Always Be Popular

Horror movies like Psycho and The Exorcist have already pushed the boundaries on what audiences expect to see out of a film. However, as horror movies got more popular, formulas and tropes became the norm. Now we are seeing a resurgence of subversive horror movies, which push our boundaries even further. With Halloween fast approaching, we’ll have to wait and see what new subversive horror flicks come out this year.

Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ is Getting a Spinoff Series

On the heels of The Boys wrapping production on season 3, Amazon has officially greenlit a spinoff series to their critically acclaimed superhero drama. The untitled series will be set in the same world as The Boys but will focus on a college for young-adult heroes similar to My Hero Academia.

Young heroes will be at the forefront of this series as we explore how the “hormonal, competitive Supes put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.”

The spinoff will be rated R and will have all of the satire, heart, and raunchiness The Boys does. Amazon describes the spinoff as being a mix of a college show with The Hunger Games.

The cast for the young heroes show currently includes Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Shane Paul McGhie, Aimee Carrero, Reina Hardesty, and Maddie Phillips with additional cast members to be announced in the future.

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, who both worked on Agent Carter and Emergence as producers, join The Boys universe as showrunners and executive producers of this spinoff series. Also attached as executive producers are Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and Michaela Starr.

According to executive producer Eric Kripke, the spinoff series is set in the same world as The Boys but will have a tone and style of its own.

“It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes”. – Eric Kripke

There are no scheduled dates of any kind for this spinoff series but it will be released exclusively to Amazon Prime.

Everything We Know About The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series

Disney Plus has many projects in the works (like the Star Wars Ahsoka series which we cover here) but one of the most anticipated projects is the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Ewan Mcregor will return to play Obi-Wan which marks his first return to the Star Wars universe since Revenge of the Sith, 15 years ago.

Release Date

Disney has just announced that the Obi Wan series will be released on May 25th, 2022. The standalone Obi-Wan project has a long history of being in development. It started out as a movie back in 2017, but was abandoned after the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The launch of Disney Plus breathed new life into the project but this time as a series.

The Story

The story details surrounding the series have not been disclosed yet, but it has been confirmed that the series will be set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and 9 years before A New Hope. It has been confirmed that Hayden Christensen will return as Darth Vader in the series to face off against Obi-Wan in a historical clash.

The series will begin on Tatooine with Obi-Wan looking after, but keeping his distance from Luke Skywalker. It has not been confirmed if we’ll see a young Luke yet but Mcgregor has stated, “It’s very possible”.

Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace, also posted an Instagram teaser in February of 2021, revealing that he’s suiting up as Darth Maul seemingly to make a live action appearance in an unknown project. He has since taken the post down.

Since Solo: A Star Wars Story takes place around the same time as the Obi-Wan series and it’s mentioned that Darth Maul is still at large during the events of the film, it’s a safe assumption that Darth Maul will still be alive during the Obi-Wan series.

Cast and Crew

The cast for the series has returning actors Joel Edgarton and Bonnie Piesse who play Owen and Beru Lars, the aunt and uncle of Luke Skywalker. The cast also has many newcomers such as Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Deborah Chow, who directed episodes of The Mandalorian, will direct the entire mini-series. She is also an executive producer for the series alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Ewan McGregor, and screenwriter Joby Harold.

What Fans Have Waited For

The series is rumored to have 6 episodes total, which means they will probably each be close to an hour long. With the prequels having a bad reputation and the sequel film series having an arguably worse one, the pressure for Star Wars to deliver on their planned projects has never been greater. The Mandalorian has already laid the groundwork for a Disney Plus Star Wars universe that could be truly groundbreaking.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street may be the most over-the-top film ever made by Martin Scorsese, who isn’t bashful about using strong language, violence, or explicit material. The film is actually the most profane movie in history. The film is about the true story of Jordan Belfort. It takes us through his rise to being a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption, and the federal government. Scorsese felt the excessive material was necessary to capture the lavish lifestyle of Jordan Belfort.

What We Do In The Shadows (2015)

The Comedy Genre Is Evolving

At the core of comedy movies, the genre exists solely for one purpose – to entertain! Comedies are created to give audiences a fun experience, whether it be from constant laughter or from cherishing the moments of brevity in an otherwise dramatic story. Comedy has become so valued by audiences that we are seeing humor included in a much wider range of genres like horror, thrillers, and dramas. The 2010s were filled with a slew of outrageous comedies but also had satires, parodies, and other sorts of humor in a variety of genres. Now that the decade has come to an end, we can only wait to see what the 2020s will bring.

Watch The First Trailer For Marvel’s Upcoming Series ‘Hawkeye’

We finally have a trailer for the second to last Marvel TV series of 2021, Hawkeye. Black Widow’s release earlier this year makes Hawkeye the last of the 6 main Avengers to get a standalone movie or TV series. The series is the 9th entry into Marvel’s 4th phase with 25 movies and TV series scheduled in total through 2023.

The film will follow Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The former Avenger has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. However, he is forced to team up with Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a superhero, when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than his plans and festive spirit.

From the trailer, it looks like we will be clued into what Hawkeye was doing after the events of Infinity War. Barton went on a mass-killing spree in Asia during the blip and the series will make him face the consequences of his dark actions. Hawkeye also looks like a full-on Christmas adventure with “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” playing in the background throughout the entire trailer.

Along with Jeremy Renner, Hawkeye has cast Hailee Steinfield, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, and Zach McClarnon. Those who watched Black Widow will be interested to know that Florence Pugh, Black Widow’s sister, is also reprising her role as Yelena Belova in the series.

Hawkeye is set to premiere on November 24th. The series is produced by Kevin Feige, Jonathan Igla, and Trinh Tran. Ms. Marvel is the last Marvel series scheduled to be released in 2021.
