Hot Tub Time Machine made a huge splash when it first came out. The ensemble cast of John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Sebastian Stan, and Chevy Chase makes the movie both fun and hilarious. The story is about a malfunctioning time machine at a ski resort that takes a man, his two friends, and his nephew back to 1986 where he must relive a fateful night to make sure his nephew will eventually be born.
Director Edgar Wright is known for making quirky and imaginative films with a lot of dry humor. He has become increasingly popular in the 21st century and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a large reason for that. The film garnered a huge fanbase when it was released. Critics and audiences alike were enamored by Wright’s unique style and direction. In a time when comic book movies are everywhere, Megamind brilliantly subverts our expectations by making the supervillain the hero of the story. The Dreamworks animation uses the classic comic book cliches to tell a fresh and original superhero tale.
Similar to Megamind, Tucker and Dale vs Evil plays off the classic horror cliches and tropes that we have all grown to love. MacGruber is not for everyone. If you like SNL humor at its best, then you’ll love MacGruber. This SNL spoof of Macgyver is crude, loud, and obnoxious but it is also extremely hilarious. The film is about former special operative MacGruber (Will Forte) who is called back into action to take down his arch-nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) before he can use a nuclear warhead to destroy Washington, D.C. The film is absurd, over the top, and a whole lot of fun.
Bridesmaids is another comedy that stars former SNL members, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. The film propelled the careers of Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson, who are now comedic giants in Hollywood. The Wolf of Wall Street may be the most over-the-top film ever made by Martin Scorsese, who isn’t bashful about using strong language, violence, or explicit material. The film is actually the most profane movie in history. The film is about the true story of Jordan Belfort. It takes us through his rise to being a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption, and the federal government. Scorsese felt the excessive material was necessary to capture the lavish lifestyle of Jordan Belfort.

One of the few comedy sequels that maintains and some might even say surpasses the quality of the first. The story is relatively the same except this time the pair of undercover cops, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, are going undercover at a college instead of a high school. They are sent to investigate the drug known as ‘WhyPhy’ and have only one lead on who it is, someone with a tattoo. There are several hilarious instances in this film that will have everyone laughing in unison.
What We Do In The Shadows is one of the most underappreciated comedies in recent years. It even inspired the ongoing FX series with the same name. The film is a mockumentary about three vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane – like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. If you’re a fan of the mockumentary style, then you’ll love the dry humor and awkwardness of the vampires throughout the film.
Ryan Reynolds fought hard to get Deadpool created. Fox was hesitant on creating a comic book movie with such graphic violence and vulgar language. However, they eventually came around and Deadpool became one of the most popular movies of the 2010s. You may not have heard of The Nice Guys, but the film represents the buddy cop comedy genre at its very best. The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, where two private detectives are hired to investigate a missing girl and the death of a star. The comedy stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling who prove to be a surprisingly effective comedic duo. The story is also entertaining in its own right, which many comedies tend to lack.
This comedy is a satire that takes aim at the music industry by poking fun at how soulless and pretentious the life of a popstar can be. Written and directed by Andy Sandberg, the film is about a former boy band member who does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status after his solo album fails spectacularly. The film features underrated comedy in the same vein as MacGruber.

The coming-of-age genre may appear to be oversaturated, but Lady Bird manages to bring fresh insights into the tumultuous adolescent years. The film follows a teenager who navigates a loving but turbulent relationship with her strong-willed mother over the course of an eventful and poignant senior year of high school. Director Greta Gerwig along with actresses Saoirse Ronan, and Laurie Metcalf complement each other well, hitting all of the emotional and comedic beats that they need to.
The Big Sick takes a different approach to the traditional romantic comedy premise by incorporating cross-cultural themes. The film is about Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani who falls in love with grad student Emily Gardner.
