In a time when comic book movies are everywhere, Megamind brilliantly subverts our expectations by making the supervillain the hero of the story. The film follows the evil genius Megamind who finally defeats his heroic nemesis, Metro Man, but is now forced to find purpose in a world without a superhero. The Dreamworks animation uses the classic comic book cliches to tell a fresh and original superhero tale.

Macgruber (2010)

MacGruber is not for everyone. If you like SNL humor at its best, then you’ll love MacGruber. This SNL spoof of Macgyver is crude, loud, and obnoxious but it is also extremely hilarious. The film is about former special operative MacGruber (Will Forte) who is called back into action to take down his arch-nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) before he can use a nuclear warhead to destroy Washington, D.C. The film is absurd, over the top, and a whole lot of fun.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street may be the most over-the-top film ever made by Martin Scorsese, who isn’t bashful about using strong language, violence, or explicit material. The film is actually the most profane movie in history. The film is about the true story of Jordan Belfort. It takes us through his rise to being a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption, and the federal government. Scorsese felt the excessive material was necessary to capture the lavish lifestyle of Jordan Belfort.

22 Jump Street (2014)

One of the few comedy sequels that maintains and some might even say surpasses the quality of the first. The story is relatively the same except this time the pair of undercover cops, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, are going undercover at a college instead of a high school. They are sent to investigate the drug known as ‘WhyPhy’ and have only one lead on who it is, someone with a tattoo. There are several hilarious instances in this film that will have everyone laughing in unison.

What We Do In The Shadows (2015)

What We Do In The Shadows is one of the most underappreciated comedies in recent years. It even inspired the ongoing FX series with the same name. The film is a mockumentary about three vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane – like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. If you’re a fan of the mockumentary style, then you’ll love the dry humor and awkwardness of the vampires throughout the film.

Deadpool (2016)

Ryan Reynolds fought hard to get Deadpool created. Fox was hesitant on creating a comic book movie with such graphic violence and vulgar language. However, they eventually came around and Deadpool became one of the most popular movies of the 2010s. Starring Ryan Reynolds as basically himself, Deadpool is about a wisecracking mercenary who becomes immortal but ugly as a result of being experimented on. Now, he sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. Deadpool is unlike any comic book film we will likely ever see.

The Nice Guys (2016)

You may not have heard of The Nice Guys, but the film represents the buddy cop comedy genre at its very best. The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, where two private detectives are hired to investigate a missing girl and the death of a star. The comedy stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling who prove to be a surprisingly effective comedic duo. The story is also entertaining in its own right, which many comedies tend to lack.

Popstar: Never Stop Stopping (2016)

This comedy is a satire that takes aim at the music industry by poking fun at how soulless and pretentious the life of a popstar can be. Written and directed by Andy Sandberg, the film is about a former boy band member who does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status after his solo album fails spectacularly. The film features underrated comedy in the same vein as MacGruber.

The Disaster Artist (2017)

We all love a “good” bad movie. The ones that are unintentional comedies. We even created a list of some of the “greatest” bad movies ever made that you can check out. However, The Room is, without a doubt, one of the greatest terrible films out there and it was created by the famous Tommy Wiseau. The Disaster Artist is a biopic about Tommy Wiseau and everything that went into the creation of The Room. We advise watching The Room before The Disaster Artist since the film contains many references. You can find The Room online on various websites and on YouTube.

Director Greta Gerwig along with actresses Saoirse Ronan, and Laurie Metcalf complement each other well, hitting all of the emotional and comedic beats that they need to.

The Comedy Genre Is Evolving

At the core of comedy movies, the genre exists solely for one purpose – to entertain! Comedies are created to give audiences a fun experience, whether it be from constant laughter or from cherishing the moments of brevity in an otherwise dramatic story. Comedy has become so valued by audiences that we are seeing humor included in a much wider range of genres like horror, thrillers, and dramas. The 2010s were filled with a slew of outrageous comedies but also had satires, parodies, and other sorts of humor in a variety of genres. Now that the decade has come to an end, we can only wait to see what the 2020s will bring.
