In classic Disney fashion, the studio is releasing a modern-day remake of the 1940s classic animation, Pinocchio. The remake is directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away) and will be released exclusively on Disney Plus.
The streaming date for Pinocchio has been set for Friday, September 8th by Disney Plus. While it is not clear how much the story will follow the animation, by looking at other Disney live-action adaptations, it seems like the studio will try to stay as true to the original source material as possible.
The teaser trailer gives us a sneak peek at the film and the performance of some of the actors involved. Tom Hanks plays Gepetto in the teaser trailer, we get to see him wishing upon a star for a boy. The trailer also teases Cynthia Erivo’s performance as the blue fairy who grants Gepetto’s wish.
Along with Tom Hanks and Cynthia Erivo, the cast of Pinocchio also includes Joseph Gordon Levitt, Lorraine Bracco, and Luke Evans.
Pinocchio has been in development since Walt Disney Pictures announced the film in 2015. However, Disney’s adaptation shouldn’t be confused with Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Pinocchio which is set for release in December of this year. Del Toro has been developing a darker and more mature Pinocchio film since 2008. The stop-motion adaptation will be released exclusively to Netflix as an original.
There are a few more Disney live-action remakes coming out soon. The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey will be released in theaters on May 26th, 2023, and Peter Pan & Wendy is expected to be released close to the end of this year.
Based on The Adventure of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, the original story is about a talking wooden block that a woodcarver makes into a wooden boy named Pinocchio. The story follows the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio and his father, a poor wood carver named Geppetto.
