In 2021, Warner Bros implemented a co-release strategy where all of their feature films were released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. The new strategy caused many waves within the film industry with some filmmakers and movie theaters condemning the move completely.
Warner Bros. decided not to continue the co-release strategy in 2022 and will have exclusive releases in theaters for their most anticipated movies. However, the films will be made available to watch on HBO Max 45 days after the theater release.
The Batman, for example, will be released in theaters on March 4th and on HBO Max on April 19th, 2022. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar discussed the new strategy on Vox’s Recode podcast.
“Think about when movies would show up on HBO, which is eight to nine months after theatrical premiere. The Batman is going to show up on day 46 on HBO Max. That is a huge change from where things were in 2018, 2017, 2016.” — Jason Kilar
The release strategy will be for WarnerMedia’s biggest tentpole films in franchises such as DC Comics, MonsterVerse, and Harry Potter.
“I feel really, really good knowing that The Batman, and Black Adam, and The Flash, and Elvis, and a whole host of other movies, are literally going to be showing up on day 46 on HBO Max in a variety of territories all over the world,” — Jason Kilar
For The Flash, Black Adam, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, we can predict their HBO Max release dates based on their expected theater release dates.
