What We Know So Far About Dune Part Two

October 29, 2021 | Film Chop

Dune was only released a week ago but it is already on track to be one of Warner Bros.’s most successful films of 2021. It had the largest opening weekend of any Warner Bros. film since the release of Joker in 2019. Dune also topped Zack Snyder’s Justice League in viewership on HBO Max during its opening weekend.

Given Dune’s quick success and the fact that it is part one of a two-part series, Warner Bros. has revealed a sequel to be in development. Dune Part Two will continue where Part One left off and presumably adapt the latter half of the book. There isn’t much information regarding the sequel yet, but there are a few things that are confirmed or anticipated.

Check out this review of Dune to learn why its an engrossing and faithful adaptation.

The Cast

The core cast of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem is expected to return along with Denis Villeneuve as director. Despite the fact that Chalamet’s character Paul Atreides was the protagonist in the first film, Zendaya’s Chani will take center stage in the sequel.

Dune Sequel

Dune Part Two will be getting an exclusive release in theaters. Warner Bros. has been releasing all of their films this year simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. However, after 2021, HBO Max and theatrical co-releases will no longer be a part of WB’s strategy. Dune Part Two will be getting an exclusive release in theaters. The release date is currently set for October 2023, although it is possible that this date will change.

HBO Spinoff Series

Warner Bros. has stated that they are behind Dune 100% and they have proved it with this announcement of a sequel and a spinoff prequel series for HBO Max. The series titled, Dune: Sisterhood, will follow the illustrious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit who influence galactic politics and wield supernatural abilities. A release date has not been set for the prequel series but Diane Ademu-John will be the showrunner on the series.

Dune Trilogy?

Denis Villeneuve is adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune novel into two films. However, Frank Herbert also wrote a sequel to Dune titled, The Messiah of Dune. Villeneuve has already expressed interest in adapting the sequel into a film and creating a trilogy. With the sequel being released in 2 years and the first movie only beginning its box office run, only time will tell if a trilogy is possible.

Dune is currently in theaters and available to watch on HBO Max.
